The One Where I Saw Rain Coming Down on a Sunny Day
Companion's Log
Stardate: Oct 22-28, 2019
We caught a ride and we ended up 10 minutes early to our appointment. So we decided we'd tract a bit and the first door we knocked on actually let us in! That's the first time that's happened to me! They're Catholic snowbirds, so they're not interested and they're moving out in a week but they were still really nice! They'd met with some missionaries before so we were able to answer her questions about prophets, so that was really neat.
Okay I gotta get something off my chest: faith is not like a little seed! Faith is not like knowing the sun will rise! Now I know what you're thinking, 'but Sister Dunn, Alma compares faith to a seed for a whole chapter!' Wrong! Alma compares the word to a seed, the act of faith is planting it! The primary song got it wrong, sorry! It's right there in Alma 32: faith is not a perfect knowledge, it's hope for things that are not seen which are true. So stop saying it's like knowing the sun will rise. We used a trust fall as an object lesson for some kids this week to explain faith and I like this description much better. Faith is trust in God, you don't know for sure that He'll catch you, but you believe and hope He will.
We got bus passes this week! We're the guinea pigs testing it out. We're still trying to figure out how to put them best to use, though they don't run on Saturday's or after 6pm, and they only go in one direction. But it will be some good contacting opportunities, hopefully. We got called out by the bus driver for being "too timid to invite these ladies to church" that never would've happened in Michigan. After district council we went to Walmart to try to contact people and I learned that it's everyone else's social anxiety that's the problem, not mine! Also just American culture of hey don't talk to me, mind yo business. Like seriously! "Hey how are you doing today?" *smiles and immediately backs her cart out of the aisle*
It's getting pretty cold, it's kind of funny when you shake someone's hand and they're all like !!!! do you have gloves??!! Or the one woman who answered the door and said we should go home because it's gonna snow. And it did! We didn't go home though. We usually do three knocks then leave if no one answers and we usually avoid doorbells in case there's a sleeping baby but this time we rang it once. As we were walking away Kathy opened the door and invited us in. She works at a health clinic and organizes a fundraiser called "Rake a Difference" and had actually reached out to our President about involving the missionaries this year but hadn't heard back about it. She was so happy to run into us, she said it must have been "a God thing" because she was in the basement and usually wouldn't have heard!
Our zone leader said something this week that stuck out to me: "Life is to be enjoyed, not endured." I know I've always had trouble with inertia: getting and staying motivated, not procrastinating, not being lazy. I've been trying to learn how to love the work. 11 hour days are pretty exhausting, and I'm used to getting home after school or work and chilling out, having some spare time to draw and unwind. Sister Randall is the opposite, she loves being busy, she gets stressed out when there's time to relax and I really don't understand that. But I don't want to just be enduring each day waiting until I get home to sleep, and I super don't want to just endure these 18 months until I can get home and watch tv and stuff again! So that's what I'm working on, focusing on the present instead of the future, learning to love working hard, being positive, enjoying instead of enduring.

P.s. thank you so much to everyone who sends me emails! They really brighten my day and help me out. I'm so sorry I run out of time to respond. Just know that I do read all of them and I love hearing literally anything from you guys! But I've been out her for 40 days now and some of y'all still haven't sent me anything :( so I can only assume that you're dead! Please at least let me know you're still alive!
Also! I wanna know! Have you ever seen rain, coming down on a sunny day? Because I did. We were walking Carmelita's dog and it was raining but there were only a few white fluffy clouds so idk?
